Designing a podcast cover

When my friend, Lauren Roberts, an anti-capitalist coach emailed me about designing her new podcast cover - it was a no brainer for me. I love podcasts and I love designing.

I first start with the concept of the podcast. For me, the concept of a brand or a podcast begins with a feeling or one sentence.

In her case, the name of the podcast is “It’s not you, it’s the system”

When I heard the title, I immediately thought of frustration.

From the feeling, I begin to find a starting point by compiling photos to create a mood board of frustrated photos.

From here, I then think about how to represent the concept visually. In this podcast’s case, the system distorts the true image of ourselves and that’s why I treated the text using Adobe Illustrator to warp the font of the podcast title.

From there, I played around with how the images and the treated text looks like together. And here is where I begin to ask for feedback from Lauren on whether she’s aligned with the suggested direction of the podcast cover design.

With feedback and also accessibility in mind, I added some other elements and features that can help make the design easier on the eye to read. Here’s the finished product!

When Lauren announced it, I immediately listened to the first episode and I highly recommend you listen to it to!
